Editions Marc Reift (Switzerland) publishes four of Philip's pieces for Wind Band. The company also produces high-quality commercial CDs of the music it publishes, both for general listening, and to help conductors and musical directors choose new material.
Show Time features three brilliant renditions. Firstly, there's the title track, Show Time, Philip's arrangement of his own Overture for Jeanie, originally for piano duet, and still available at PRB Music. Then there's Samba..alla Turca, and finally, the piece that started it all, The Lone Ar-ranger! The pieces are superbly played by the Philharmonic Wind Band (Prague), conducted by Marc Reift.

Celebrations |

|
In 2006 year, I was contacted by Ron Armstrong, MD of the Southampton Pops Orchestra, here in the UK, to ask whether I had thought of making an arrangement of The Lone Ar-ranger! for their sort of set-up, essentially a full wind band + strings, and with some extras like keyboard, rhythm and bass guitars. The addition of a keyboard has allowed me to add in some extra instruments, or rather their sounds, where appropriate, like banjo, harpsichord and celeste.
The Southampton Pops Orchestra, which has now changed its name to Pops Incorporated UK has just released a brand new CD, Celebrations, which includes The Lone Ar-ranger! For further details, and to order the CD, please click here. Ron writes: 'Celebrations' is an enlightening CD, featuring some of the best-loved music from the past 50 years, as well as some brand new works. Titles on this CD include 'Music From The Gladiator' by Hans Zimmer, 'It Was A Very Good Year' by Frank Sinatra, Philip R Buttall's 'The Lone Ar-Ranger', and 'Lord Of The Rings Symphony No. 1', with music featured in the epic film trilogy. The CD is guaranteed to make you sit up and listen, with an exciting and invigorating performance from the orchestra.
Pops Incorporated UK featured The Lone Ar-ranger! on their recent USA tour, and will also be playing two further arrangements I have made for them, at future concerts.

Light Fantastic! |
 |
|
One of my earliest arrangements of The Lone Ar-ranger! was for the Radio Light Orchestra. The RLO was formed in 1999, by ex-Royal Marines musicians who thought they had spotted a gap in the market. The orchestra's first concert was given at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth, later moving to the Devonport Playhouse as audiences grew. More recently its appearances in Plymouth Guildhall have attraced audiences of over 600. Although Plymouth-based, the RLO has appeared throughout Devon & Cornwall. The conductor is John Ware, with Chris Sheppard as leader.
The RLO has just released its first CD entitled Light Fantastic!, on the Clovelly label, consisiting of almost an hour's music in the lighter vein. Despite its usually wide-ranging international repertoire, the pieces included on this new recording have mostly West Country connections.
The RLO very kindly decided to include two of my pieces on the CD, and writes the following: 'The Lone Ar-ranger Goes Orchestral!' was originally written as a piano duet and is a 'quickfire' skit on a number of popular tunes. The trick is to identify them all! 'Autumn Embers' began life as a guitar solo. These orchestral arrangements were made especially for the RLO by Philip R Buttall, a well-known Plymouth composer, performer and critic. Teresa Maher plays the oboe solo.

Sax in the City |

The National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain's show, Sax in the City was voted number 1 show by show audiences at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The new audience text-vote system gave the punters chance to highlight their favourite shows by texting a score after each show. By the NSC's final-day appearances, Sax in the City had topped the charts, beating the other 1000+ acts appearing at the Fringe.
The NSC, directed by Nigel Wood, has just issued a brand new CD, Sax in the City, which features a special arrangement of The Lone Ar-ranger Goes Sax Mad! for soprillo, sopranino and soprano sax, affectionately known as the 'Squeakers Trio'! Also on the CD is Nigel's arrangement of my Eclogue, where he writes: Conceived as a devotional piece for flugelhorn and organ, this version featuring the tiny Soprillo blends an attractive air of Victorian setimentality with a jazz tinge.

by Philip R Buttall of PRB Music
This was written originally for a secondary school recorder group and piano, but has been re-scored for flute ensemble. Flute 1 could be played by just one performer, Flute 2 splits into two parts frequently, and Flute 3 only once, so a minimum of five players is really needed. The jazz notation was soon mastered, once the players had associated the phrases with their more easily-felt rhythms. Flute 2 can be played by treble recorders, and Flu...

Piano Exercise & Pieces for the Elementary Music School |
 |
|
I am proud to be able to include on PRB Music, a selection of 35 piano pieces and duets from Piano Exercises & Pieces for the Elementary Music School by Dragana Petković & Biljana Krstić.
As well as the book's joint-composers, Dragana and Biljana are both experienced piano teachers and distinguished performers, currently working at the Josef Marinković Elementary Music School in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro. I am privileged to have been involved in advising on, and reviewing the work, whilst it has been prepared for publication - it has just been published by Narodna Knjiga, in Belgrade.
Dragana and Biljana have kindly translated the original Serbian text into English, and we have grouped the 35 pieces into a number of small selections, according to their difficulty and design. We've also just added some new pieces for beginners by Biljana, which make excellent use of the colour facility in Sibelius 3.
You can find everything at the Keyboard section of the store.
Tragically, Dragana (born 1969) died suddenly in March 2007 and, whilst I didn't have the honour of meeting her in person, I'm sure that she would like her memory to live on through her music and pictures on this site.

Florilegium |
 |
|
At the end of 2004, I was asked if my Sonatina for Piano Duet could be included in a piano-works (one piano - four hands) Florilegium, by Professor Weiming Li, from the Music Department, Xiamen University, where it will subsequently be used as standard teaching material all over China.
Professor Li has just let me know the Florilegium has now appeared in print, published by the Shanghai Music Publishing House, from where it is available. At present, the site's English translation isn't up-and-running, but if you can read Chinese, and currently have Windows Chinese Edition installed, then you can read all about it already!
