Unfortunately it took Gaspare Vigarani two years to build the theatre and consequently by the time the opera was first performed in February 1662 the couple were married and the Queen was already pregnant. The original production also included extensive ballet sequences by Benserade with music by Lully and the spectacular event was reported to have taken about six hours to perform in its entirety.
